A bucket list item for every traveler while in Thailand is to see an elephant right? So many travelers associate seeing an elephant with riding an elephant. But do you know how heavy those baskets are alone that sit on an elephants back, then add in 2-3 people sitting in those baskets, and do those rides 6-10 times a day, all for a 30 minute experience and an instagram picture… is it really worth it?
As a guest at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Phuket, we were taught about having ethical direct experiences with the elephants, while allowing them to remain safe in a natural habitat. The staff really emphasizes how important it is to protect the elephants and they ask us to spread the word to friends. Hence my soapbox above. #sorrynotsorry
At Elephant Jungle Sanctuary, we had the chance to learn about the elephants lifestyles and behaviors and actually prepare and cut up the food to feed the elephants, straight from our hands! Elephant Jungle Sanctuary took the time to educate us about why riding an elephant actually causes damage to these gentle giants, so instead we had the chance to play with the elephants in a huge mud pool, then scrub and bathe them. Not only was their so much joy on all of our faces, but I think the elephants loved all the extra attention also!
The lush sanctuary in Phuket provides a place that feels like the wild, while allowing the elephants to be protected and under veterinary care. The lifetime memories that we now have from spending quality time with the elephants can never be forgotten!
If you are in Phuket, you must visit Elephant Jungle Sanctuary! Say hi to the little bad boy elephant, Justin Bieber for me!
